History
  • Founded in 1921 by local community leaders
  • Has provided continuous fire protection services for 77 years
  • 100% volunteer organization that works hand in hand with Baltimore County Fire Department
  • First fire engine was 1921 American LaFrance with right hand chain drive
  • In 1934, built the first phase of existing fire house on Reisterstown Road
  • During World War II, built their own fire engine using a surplus army truck
  • In 1970, initiated full service ambulance coverage
  • Today, the following equipment is in service:
    • 1994 Seagrave Pumper/Tanker
    • 1994 Imperial 100 foot Aerial Ladder Truck
    • 1994 Ford Special Response Mini-Pumper
    • 1994 Ford Ambulance
    • 1996 Dodge Utility Truck
  • September 1998, moved into new fire station on Owings Mills Boulevard


Current Activity
  • In 1997, the fire company had approximately 4,100 equipment responsees, consisting of:
    • 1400 Single piece fire responses
    • 700 Multiple piece responses
    • 1800 Ambulance responses
  • Primary first response area of approximately 25 square miles
  • Owings Mills Volunteer's respond to almost 4 fire calls and 5 ambulance calls per day


How fire protection is provided in Baltimore County
  • In Baltimore County, there are 22 career (Paid) fire stations and 33 volunteer fire companies
  • Response to an alarm is based on the distance to be traveled by the fire company (Paid or Volunteer)
  • A computerized system has every intersection in the county pre-programmed for up to 12 alarms
  • Central dispatch (911) and Baltimore County Fire Department headquarters is in Towson
  • In Baltimore County, there is a unique program of complete cooperation between paid and volunteer fire departments
  • As areas grow, more career fire stations are put in place by the County to supplement the system, not to replace the volunteers


Benefits provided by "Volunteers"
  • When considering facilities, equipment, support and labor costs, Baltimore County must spend per year the following ammounts:
    • for each Career pumper company = 2.5M
    • for each Career truck company = 3.0M
    • for each Career ambulance unit = 1.5M
  • Owings Mills Volunteer Fire Co. is saving Baltimore County taxpayers in excess of $5M/year
  • Overall, the potential savings in all of Baltimore County from the Volunteers is in excess of $100M
