The Allergy Connection

Sometimes the Connection is Obvious...Sometimes it Isn't.

Adults Adults

Adults frequently suffer from complaints, such as headaches, fatigue, impaired concentration, and mood swings, the cause of which can be illusive. A physician, unable to easily find a physical cause of such a complaint, may state that you are suffering from something that is psychosomatic (or emotional in origin). This, undoubtedly leaves you feeling frustrated with no "medical" way of easing your suffering.

However, relief may be available for even the most persistent of these problems. Allergies, especially to foods, may be the culprit.

Food Allergies are receiving greater and greater attention by the medical community. If the above situation is something you have experienced, you are not alone! Foods can cause a wide range of adverse reactions in the human body from head to toe. There are two categories of food allergies: a "fixed" food allergy produces an immediate acute reaction in the individual such as difficulty breathing, hives, or throat swelling. These reactions are most commonly caused by egg, peanut and shellfish. A "fixed" food allergy, however, accounts for less than 10% of all food allergy reactions. "Masked" food allergies involve foods that are ingested at least twice per week. Because the foods are ingested so frequently, the symptoms are chronic, of a lower grade and therefore more difficult to diagnose.

Candida is a chronic medical condition affecting both men and women that is caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the body. Dr.Layton believes that many cases of candida are actually impacted by food allergies

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is often misunderstood or dismissed by many physicians. However, Dr.Layton believes that some PMS symptoms may actually be a hypersensitivity reaction to progesterone, estrogen, and/or a luteinizing hormone.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Some of the treatments our office have found to be successful include:

Elimination Diet
An elimination diet is a proven and safe method for determining which food or foods is causing you to experience allergy symptoms. An Allergy Connection doctor prescribes a supervised diet for 10-14 days, eliminating milk, wheat, egg, corn, sugar, chocolate, citrus, coffee, soybean, peanut, and preservatives.

The doctor places you on a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, chicken, turkey, fish, lamb, lean meat, and rice. After 10-14 days, foods are then reintroduced to the diet, one at a time, to determine which causes a reaction.

Skin Point Titration (SET)
A SET test involves injecting an extract beneath the skin to detect an allergy to pollen or mold. If an allergy exists, a weal (or bump) arises on the arm, sometimes accompanied by nasal congestion. We can recommend a treatment plan where we discover which of the injected allergens causes a reaction.

Intradermal Provacation/Neutralization Food Testing
This highly accurate test involves injecting a small amount of a suspected food allergen beneath the skin to safely determine if this is what is causing the patient's symptoms. If the patient is allergic to the food, mild allergy symptoms appear.

Subingual Testing for Chemcial Sensitivity
This technique is used to detect hypersensititity to inhalants, foods, and hormones. Three drops of a suspected allergen are placed under the tongue to determine sensitivity. If symptoms occur, a weaker dilution is used until a neutralizing dose is found.
