Amy is a 15 year-old who was initially seen by me in 1993 with
learning disabilities, headaches, and nasal stuffiness. An
education assessment revealed that she had above average intellectual
potential, but she had serious difficulty in
processing information. Amy was also described as being "a
non-exceptional student with learning problems, stressed,
difficulty coping, and depression." She was also noted to
be impulsive and a slow reader. Her main learning
disability was described as "visual and auditory learning
deficits."
Additional history included nasal stuffiness for several
years, watery eyes, urinary frequency, fatigue, headaches
especially to scented candles and perfumes.
Amy's mother felt that she was adversely affected by foods,
additives, and dyes.
Allergy testing revealed positive symptoms with additive
testing. Specifically, BHA affected concentration, red dye
caused fatigue and dizziness, yellow dye provoked a pulse
increase of 12 points, and resulted in increased
activity level. Amy was also found to be allergic to over 20
foods, 16 molds, and 6 weeds.
Within six weeks of immunotherapy treatment, her teacher found
her attention span and concentration to be improved. She was
doing more homework on her own. In addition, other symptoms
including nasal stuffiness, watery eyes, dizziness, urinary
frequency, headaches and fatigue all significantly improved.
Two years later, Amy continues to do well with her physical
complaints, is maintaining a "B" average in school, and is not
demonstrating symptoms compatible with clinical depression.
Amy represents a child with multiple allergies who is also
diagnosed as having learning disabilities and depression. Even
though she still has a learning disability, she is much better
able to cope in a school setting.
