On December 11, 1995, 60 Minutes presented a 20-minute segment on
the topic of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD.
During the discussion, it was stated that as of 1990, one million
children were receiving the drug Ritalin in the United States and
as of 1994, two million children were being treated with Ritalin
for ADHD. This 100% increase in just four years is a very
disturbing fact that parents, teachers, and physicians must face.
Dr. Swanson, an expert, was quoted on 60 Minutes that it is his
opinion that 25-30% of children diagnosed with ADHD, and
subsequently treated with Ritalin, are misdiagnosed. In
addition, Dr. Swanson stated during his interview that he
personally finds Ritalin and other stimulant medications to be
only 60% effective and not the 90% success rate that is generally
recognized by the medical community. What the 60 Minutes program
failed to do was address what is causing these children's ADHD
and what safer and effective treatments are available to treat
this problem. There is often a rush to use Ritalin. Children
who have been diagnosed with ADHD typically exhibit symptoms
including:
- Short attention span and concentration
- Aggressive behavior
- Clumsiness, poor coordination
