Allergy Connection

Will

Will is a 59 year-old male who was initially seen by me in the spring of 1991. His chief complaint was chronic Sinusitis, "personality change" with allergic reactions.

A review of Will's medical history revealed multiple medical symptoms including severe nasal stuffiness, post-nasal drip and drainage, eye and ear itching, dark circles under the eyes, frequent Bronchitis, heartburn, muscle and joint pain, sinus headaches, fatigue, and a history of increased sinus infections over a period of one year. He was also concerned about "being unpleasant, unable to control my temper" after ingesting foods. His pollen symptoms increased in the spring and fall and with damp weather. His physical examination was completely normal except for an allergic appearance of nasal turbinates.

At a follow-up visit only six weeks later, Will was being treated for his allergic reactions to 16 foods and 11 inhalants and had significantly improved. Specifically, his nose, eye, ear, and gastrointestinal problems, muscle and joint pain, and headaches had all markedly improved. In addition, he was excited to tell me that his personality changes which occurred after eating had resolved.

At Will's last office visit in November 1994 after three years on immunotherapy and with dietary changes, he continued to do very well. He was even able to eat the foods to which he had showed allergic and noted no or minimal reactions to these foods. Nasal symptoms continued to be well-controlled, and in Will's words, "my sinuses are open all year long," All of his medical complaints that were of great concern in 1991 had completely resolved by 1994.

Will represents an excellent example of an adult patient who had typical allergic problems as well as a history of behavior changes that were not secondary to emotional stress but caused by foods ingested.
